Water Solenoid Valve: Selection, Sizes & Industrial Use Cases
Water Solenoid Valve: Selection, Sizes & Industrial Use Cases
Carroland Pneumatics designs and manufactures water solenoid valves for equipment builders and automation integrators worldwide. As an ISO 9001-certified pneumatic and fluid-control components supplier established in 1992, we support ODM and OEM programs with stable lead times, documented dimensional drawings, and test reports on request. This guide covers how these valves work, the specifications that matter, and where they are used on the production floor.
What Is a Water Solenoid Valve
A water solenoid valve is an electromechanically actuated on/off valve. An electric coil generates a magnetic field that moves a plunger or diaphragm to open or close the flow path. Unlike manual or pneumatic actuators, it is controlled by a simple electrical signal, which makes it ideal for timed dosing, automated fill cycles, and remote-controlled water lines.
How a Water Solenoid Valve Works
In the de-energized (normally closed) state, spring force keeps the orifice shut. When voltage is applied to the coil, the magnetic field lifts the plunger against the spring, releasing flow. Removing the signal lets the spring re-seat the seal. Normally open versions invert this behavior. Selection therefore starts with the required fail-safe state of your process.
Key Specifications to Consider
- Operating voltage: 12V DC and 24V DC are the most common for industrial control cabinets; 110V/220V AC versions exist for building services.
- Port size: from 1/8″ to 1″ NPT or G thread, chosen by the required flow rate and pressure drop budget.
- Pressure range: confirm both the minimum operating pressure (some diaphragm designs need a differential) and the maximum working pressure.
- Media compatibility: clean water, mildly pressurized water, and light aqueous fluids; verify temperature and any additives.
Material Options
Brass bodies suit general industrial water service. Stainless steel 316 is specified where corrosion resistance or food-contact grades are required. Engineering-plastic bodies are a lightweight, cost-effective choice for potable-water and low-pressure duties. Seals (NBR, EPDM, or FKM) should be matched to the fluid and temperature.
How to Select the Right Water Solenoid Valve
- Define the fail-safe state (normally closed vs. normally open).
- Match voltage and connector to your controller (DIN 43650, flying leads, or cable gland).
- Size the orifice and port thread to your flow and plumbing standard.
- Confirm the body and seal materials against the fluid and temperature.
- Request dimensional drawings and a test report before volume commitment.

Common Industrial Use Cases
- Water treatment: timed dosing, backwash control, and filtration sequencing.
- Irrigation and agriculture: zone control and fertigation lines.
- HVAC and boilers: make-up water and cooling loops.
- Beverage and packaging: filling and CIP isolation valves.
- Industrial automation: coolant and process-water routing on machinery.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a 12V DC water solenoid valve run on 24V?
No. Coils are wound for a specific voltage. Applying 24V to a 12V coil overheats and destroys it. Always match the nameplate voltage.
What is the difference between normally closed and normally open?
A normally closed valve blocks flow until energized; a normally open valve flows until energized. Choose based on the safe state of your process during a power loss.
Which material is best for potable water?
Stainless steel 316 or certified engineering plastic with food-grade seals (EPDM) are typical. Confirm any local drinking-water approvals required for your market.
Do you provide dimensional drawings and test reports?
Yes. As an ISO 9001-certified manufacturer, Carroland supplies dimensional drawings and batch test reports on request to support ODM and OEM qualification.
Are these valves suitable for compressed air?
Water solenoid valves are optimized for liquid service. For compressed-air actuation, use our dedicated pneumatic solenoid and directional valves sized for air pressure and cycle life.
